WHAT ARE FELLOWSHIPS AND WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT?

Many students have a desire to continue their education beyond an undergraduate degree. Fellowships help us recruit and retain the best graduate students in order for them to conduct their innovative research at the University of Manitoba. These awards can be given in recognition of exceptional work or can be provided to individuals requiring additional funding to conduct the research effectively.

Graduate students help define a research-intensive university. By keeping our best graduate students in Manitoba, and by recruiting them from other provinces and throughout the world, we are not only supporting them in their own lines of inquiry, but we are also supporting the efforts of our researchers.

The availability of top-quality graduate students plays an enormous role in attracting and retaining outstanding faculty members, who rely on the work of their students in their research. It is also true that as we attract exceptional faculty members, the best graduate students will be drawn to the opportunity of working with them.

Our goal is to build a considerable endowment fund to provide fellowships in greater number and in substantial value. Providing more and larger fellowships will benefit not only the university, but the community as well, in keeping future researchers and knowledge workers in the province. The endowment fund will enable us to remain competitive with other research-intensive universities in Canada, which offer substantial funding for graduate students
